Learning to Appreciating Winter

As we await signs of spring in the northern hemisphere, I reflect on winter.  While most of us are not fans of colder weather, I try to find the positive in the winter.  Like everyone else I would prefer to be in shorts and sandals.  However, winter is a time of rest, renewal, and dormancy in the natural world.

This is also true for humans.  When you align your patterns with nature, balance follows.  Our flow seems more natural and in line.  Fighting against the seasons is a waste of our precious energy.

Winter is the perfect time to implement self care into your routine.  Slow down and take care of yourself.  It’s beneficial  to your well-being and protective against the cold and flu season.  A simple hot bath once a week can work wonders.  An afternoon spent curled up on the couch with a good book is fantastic for your soul.

When we have a cold and rainy or snowy day, I take that opportunity to express gratitude for it.  As I listen to the gentle patter of rain on the roof or watch the fire dance in the wood stove, it brings joy to my heart.  It’s soothing and perfect for renewal.
Take advantage of the winter season.  The cold dark days are splendid to turn inward, reflect, and rejuvenate yourself from the inside out.

Use this time to catch up on your favorite books, write your book, enjoy your favorite series, practice gentle yoga, sip on a cup of hot tea, indulge in a glass of wine, go for a winter hike, or journal.  Do things you enjoy and take rest in this reflective season.

However, despite finding the joy in winter I too will dance in delight at the first signs of life reemerging, signaling warmer days ahead.

I hope this short piece will help you through the last part of winter.  Giving you a new sense of appreciation for this important time of year.
